Birthstones by Month: A Simple Guide to Every Month's Stone

Birthstones are one of the oldest and friendliest traditions in jewellery: a stone tied to the month you were born, worn as a small personal talisman or given as a thoughtful, foolproof gift. The modern list below is the one most widely used in the English-speaking world. For each month we have noted what the stone is traditionally associated with, and flagged the ones that make especially lovely bracelets. These are traditions and associations, not promises — but they make choosing a stone delightfully easy. For more on how we think about stones, see our guide to crystal bracelet meanings.

January — Garnet

A deep, glowing red stone long associated with constancy, energy and protection. Garnet is durable and rich in colour, making it a warm, hard-wearing choice for a bracelet and a classic winter red.

February — Amethyst

The violet quartz associated with calm, clarity and sobriety of mind. Amethyst is one of the most popular bracelet stones of all — soothing in colour, widely available and beautiful next to clear quartz.

March — Aquamarine

The sea-blue beryl tied to calm and clear communication, like still water. It makes a serene, elegant bracelet; our full piece on aquamarine covers it in depth.

April — Diamond (or Clear Quartz)

Diamond is the traditional April stone, associated with strength and clarity. For a natural stone bracelet, clear quartz is the much-loved stand-in — the "master" crystal, endlessly versatile and tied to clarity and amplification.

May — Emerald (or Green Aventurine / Jade)

Emerald, the green stone of renewal and love, is the classic May stone. On a bracelet, green aventurine and jade are popular green alternatives, both tied to growth, harmony and good fortune.

June — Pearl or Moonstone

June has two lovely options. Pearl is the classic, associated with purity and calm. Moonstone — glowing and tied to intuition and new beginnings — is the crystal-lover's favourite and makes a beautiful bracelet.

July — Ruby (or Red Agate / Carnelian)

Ruby, the vivid red stone of passion and vitality, is July's classic. For a stone bracelet, warm reds like carnelian and red agate carry a similar energy and colour at an everyday price.

August — Peridot

A fresh, lime-green stone associated with lightness, warmth and good cheer. Peridot's bright colour is distinctive and cheerful, and it makes an unusual, summery bracelet.

September — Sapphire (or Lapis Lazuli / Blue Quartz)

Sapphire, the blue stone of wisdom and loyalty, is September's classic. On a bracelet, lapis lazuli and blue quartz offer that same deep, calming blue and a long association with truth and clarity.

October — Opal or Tourmaline

October's stones are the play-of-colour opal and the many-coloured tourmaline, both associated with creativity and balance. Black tourmaline, tied to grounding and protection, is an especially popular bracelet choice.

November — Citrine or Topaz

Warm, golden stones associated with optimism, warmth and abundance. Citrine — sunny yellow quartz — is a cheerful, uplifting bracelet stone and a lovely choice for the darker months.

December — Turquoise (or Blue Topaz / Tanzanite)

December's best-known stone is turquoise, the sky-blue stone long associated with protection and good fortune. Its warm, earthy blue makes a distinctive, characterful bracelet.

How to wear or gift a birthstone

A birthstone bracelet is one of the easiest gifts to get right — it is personal by definition and needs no explanation. You can wear your own as a small daily talisman, or give someone theirs with a simple note. If you are buying as a gift, our gift guide covers sizing and presentation. Whichever stone is yours, treat it kindly — our care guide has the basics.
